The security vulnerability called “Heartbleed” only affects websites that use an OpenSSL, or open source encryption technology.  Heritage Federal Credit Union continually evaluates its systems and potential vulnerabilities and has no known risks to our membership as a result of the “Heartbleed” vulnerability.  The credit union continues to take proactive steps with all of our vendors to ensure the safety and soundness of all HFCU systems.  You can be assured that your accounts remain safe and secure.  To make sure that you’re doing all you can to protect your personal information, please take a moment and review these helpful security tips.

Whether you're online or on your mobile device, the following tips can help protect your personal information.

  1. Install and update anti-virus and spyware-detection software, as well as a firewall.
  2. Keep your computer and browser updated by allowing automatic downloads.
  3. Never respond to emails or web pages requesting personal information verification.
  4. Delete emails from unknown senders with nonsensical information, subject line typos, or suspicious links.
  5. Do not click any links in suspicious emails.
  6. Use strong passwords with a mix of numbers, random characters, and upper- and lowercase letters.
  7. Make sure your password for Online Banking and Mobile are unique and not used on other websites.
  8. Limit your sharing of personal information online and read privacy statements.
  9. When you shop online, check your browser for an "s" (for "secure") in the web address (i.e., "https").
  10. Set passwords and enable screen locks to prevent others from using your devices.

Other Tips

  1. Check your account information frequently and report any suspicious transactions immediately.
  2. Go paperless and receive statements electronically to better protect your account information.
